I was meeting an old friend from high school, someone I hadn’t seen, well, since high school, because she and her husband relocated to the UK. They were coming to visit South Africa, and I jumped at the opportunity to see her because I always love to reconnect when the planets align.

Since seeing each other, she's had two boys. So I thought it would be quiet fun to put together a South African snack pack for them, filled with the things many of us grew up with and still secretly love.

They’re not all exclusively South African, but they’re definitely part of our childhood memories.

Here’s what made it into mine:

🍫 1. Tex – soft aerated chocolate and wafer that feels like a lighter, happier version of a KitKat.

🍫 2. Bar One – chewy caramel, nougat, and chocolate, the energy bar we all pretended counted as lunch.

🍫 3. Lunch Bar – layers of wafer, caramel, and nuts wrapped in milk chocolate, chaotic in the best way.

🍫 4. Kit Kat KitKat – crisp wafer layers covered in milk chocolate, perfect for a quick break (or for sharing… if you really must)

🍓 5. Fizzers – chewy, fruity, and guaranteed to glue your teeth together.

🧡 6. Flings – light, airy, cheesy corn puffs that somehow disappear faster than you planned.

💜 7. Eclairs – the ultimate pocket treat, hard toffee on the outside, soft chocolate inside,

🥛 8. Milo – the malty chocolate drink that doubles as comfort in a mug (or straight from the tin with a spoon, no judgment).

🧀 9. NikNaks – the crunchier cousin of Flings, covered in that bright orange dust you’ll never get off your fingers.

🍬 10. Smarties – colourful chocolate buttons that taste like every birthday party ever.

These are the kinds of snacks that make you smile before you even open them, tiny reminders of tuck shops, road trips, and after-school sugar rushes.
